Has anyone ever heard of Dirt Cake?...Yes?....No?
Anyway, my first time ever having Dirt Cake was when I was younger...a lot younger. My grandmother told me it was really made of dirt and worms and even though I believed her...I ate a lot because it was so good.
That first taste of Dirt Cake was a long time ago and I had been dying to have someone make it for me again. I suppose that I could have made it myself but it is a lot more fun to have someone else make things for you. This Halloween though I decided I would make a Dirt Cake as a special treat for everyone at work. It turned out really great and I thought I'd share the recipe I used with ya'll.
Follow up:
1 to 1 1/4 lb. pkg. Oreos (frozen)
1(8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
3 cups milk
1 (12 oz.) tub Cool Whip
2 (3 1/2 oz.)pkg. instant chocolate pudding
1/2 tsp. vanilla
lots of Gummi Worms
Candy pebbles for the top
Crunch up the Oreos (I did it in a plastic bag with a rolling pin). Set aside out of the way so you're not tempted to eat the ingredients...it's not allowed!
Blend the vanilla, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and butter.
In a separate bowl mix up the pudding mix and the milk (make sure the milk is ice cold).
And, here comes the fun part...fold the Cool Whip into the pudding and then fold in the butter cream cheese mix. Oh, even though you should freeze the Oreos, make sure the Cool Whip is thawed since it's kind of hard to "fold" frozen Cool Whip.
Now it's time to layer it all together. Sprinkle some of the crunched up Oreos on the bottom of a large serving bowl. Next layer in some of the pudding mixture and some Gummi Worms. Keep layering 'til you run out. Make sure you save some Oreos for the top.
This recipe is good for about fifteen people. I substituted all low fat alternatives for the cream cheese, Cool Whip, milk, and butter and it came out great. I'd recommend doing this because if you don't some people who are watching their weight may not eat it and it would be really, really, rich otherwise.
This was a big hit at my job it was gone within like thirty minutes. As soon as people found out about it they all came tunning downstairs. Well actually I take that back they didn't at first until I told them what was in it, then they came running downstairs. But I can't take credit for this recipe because I got it off of a website called Cooks.com. This website has a lot of wonderful recipes and they will have about ten different ways to make one dish.
